  The Byzantine and Christian Museum (Greek: Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο) is situated at Vassilissis Sofias Avenue in Athens, Greece. It was founded in 1914, and houses more than 25,000 exhibits with rare collections of pictures, scriptures, frescoes, pottery, fabrics, manuscripts, and copies of artifacts from the 3rd century AD to the late medieval era. It is one of the most important museums in the world in Byzantine Art. In June 2004, in time for its 90th anniversary and the 2004 Athens Olympics, the museum reopened to the public after an extensive renovation and the addition of another wing.

  Lovely museum, very nicely laid out. Interesting exhibits. Fantastic cafe & restaurant in a quiet garden setting. Centrally located so it's easy to get to.

  Really nice collection of religious icons. Pretty and relaxing courtyard at the entrance of the museum, too.

  This museum is well outside the usual touristic museums trail of Athens. I also was there out the touristic season so the place was not crowded at all. It is situated just 10 minutes north of the Syntagma square acroos the military museum. The museum covers a very important period of the post classical Greek history. The museum is superb in my view and has a very large collection of exhibits that are also very well documented and presented. The cafeteria outside is also quite nice and you can rest and have a coffee in the middle of your visit. Reserve about 2 hours for it. If your visit to Athens is longer than 2 days or you have seen the main sights (Acropollis etc...) before then this museum should definitely be on your to visit list.

  The venue looked deceptively small. However most of the exhibits are displayed in the underground hall. Could spent about 2-3 hours to peruse all the stuff. Entry fee is 8 euro. Anyone above 65 years of age is 4 euro. Once you entered from the main building, the ticket office is located on the left building and that’s where you start your journey. Most of the display are into Christian Byzantine era to 17 century painting of Christ and Mary including other themes. Other displays are marble crafting used in buildings, paraphernalia in daily life of people living in that era. All the exhibits are nicely displayed and themed. The lightings are good and very professionally maintained.
